Directions:

Read the following excerpt from an article and write an essay. In your essay, you should explain whether or to what extent you agree with the author. Support your argument with reasons and relevant examples.

Write your answer in about 160-200 words on the ANSWER SHEET. (20 points)

Many of us, whatever our field of work, fear that showing uncertainty can damage our image —— and we may compensate by expressing overconfidence in an attempt to win trust. But in many situations people are willing to trust those who can admit they don’t have a definite answer. Recent studies found that communicating uncertainty and even admitting our mistakes is not harmful and can even be beneficial to trustworthiness. So, failure in “expertise” can be compensated by higher integrity and benevolence. When communicating uncertainty in a transparent way, we are perceived as less biased and wiling to tell the truth.

Changing technology stimulates the brain and increase intelligence. But that may only be true if the technology challenges us. In a world run by intelligent machines, our lives could get a lot simpler. Would that makes us less intelligent? Artificial intelligence is taking over many human jobs. For instance, planes are being flown much of the time by automatic pilots. And the complex problem of controlling air traffic around large modern airports is also achieved by artificial intelligence that operates well beyond the capability of mere human air traffic controllers. Artificial intelligence is embedded in many features of modern life for simple reason that intelligent machines can already outperform humans, including some aptitudes where there was once thought to be a human advantage, such as playing chess, and writing poetry, or even novels.

As machines get smarter, they will do more of our thinking for us and make life easier. In the future, the electronic assistant will develop to the point that it serves similar functions as a real living butler, fulfilling requests such as: “Organize a dinner party for six on Thursday, Jeeves, and invite the usual guests.” At that point, our long struggle with challenging technologies is at an end. Like Bertie Wooster, we can take it easy knowing that the hard work of planning and organizing is being done by a better brain——the electronic assistant. Starved of mental effort, our brains will regress.

Currently, in the field of artificial intelligence, great achievements have been made, and artificial intelligence is taking over a good many human jobs. In the excerpt, the author assumes that since artificial intelligence can plan and organize for us, our brains will regress. Nevertheless, I disagree with the author’s opinion.

I cling to the idea that our world won’t be like some science-fiction scenes where human brains are inferior, even if intelligent machines are getting increasingly smarter. To begin with, no matter how superior, artificial intelligence needs us just as much as we need them. In other words, the computer-based artificial intelligence has to rely on humans for maintenance to ensure its survival. It also requires our supplies and repairs, henceour brains are going to catch up with the artificial intelligence. What is more, interactions between humans can never be replaced by machines. It is beyond their abilities to communicate and interact with guests like us, although the electronic assistants can plan and organize a dinner party for us. For intelligent machines, it is unlikely to develop human-like social competence which consumes a great deal of brain work.

To sum up, the concern about whether artificial intelligence will make our brains lazy is caused by an overestimate of the impact of technology on human race and a lack of vision about human intelligence. After all, human brains will also evolve as the development of artificial intelligence. (237 words)
